Holocaust Education and Commemoration

As the number of Londoners with living memories of the Holocaust continues to fall, Holocaust education and commemoration is more important than ever.

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place on 27th January each year, and the GLA should encourage all London boroughs to participate in this international day of commemoration and rememberance. There are a plethora of ways that councils can commemorate HMD, and these can be explored through the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. It is also vitally important that HMD is commemorated in schools, and that the Holocaust element of the National Curriculum is meaningfully implemented.

A significant opportunity for London exists in the form of the proposed Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre beside Parliament. We want London’s politicians to give this important initiative their full backing. Similarly, we would ask the Greater London Authority to back the campaign for a permanent memorial to the victims of the transatlantic slave trade in Hyde Park.

Pledge 1:

London’s politicians, the GLA and London’s councils should continue to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

Pledge 2:

Support the proposed Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre beside Parliament.
